Level 6-9 goes back to a final tricky vowel pair combo: the infamous -ie vs. -ei pair. Everyone knows the old "i before e except after c" line, "except in words that say 'a' as in neighbor and weigh." Many memes have been made about the limitations of this rule, however (see below).

Despite its limitations, this mnemonic device is still a good start, and we recommend teaching it to your students. The ten words used in this level are piece, field, neighbor, weigh, believe, receive, view, chief, friend, and height. The classic rhyme will hold true for nine of those 10 words, with only 'height' breaking the pattern. Visual memory will have to take care of the exceptions to this rule, but "i before e except after c, except in words that say 'a' as in 'neighbor' and 'weigh' " will help a student to be on the right track more often than not.
